Mahmud of Ghazni’s raid of 1026 is the best known of those attacks. The present temple exists because Sardar Patel visited the ruins on 13 November 1947 and resolved to rebuild them, and Dr Rajendra Prasad performed the pran-pratishtha on 11 May 1951. Its queue and entry rules, including the ban on phones and cameras, set the pace for everything after it. A sensible order from there is the Old Somnath Temple, the Triveni Ghat group, Dehotsarg Tirth and then Bhalka Tirth. To follow Krishna’s story instead, start at Bhalka, go on to Gita Mandir and finish at Dehotsarg.

The Trust runs a Tirth Darshan bus to the nearby temples at a nominal charge. It leaves from the temple’s main gate at 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM.

Book rooms and poojas only through the Trust’s own website. In February 2026 Gujarat Police arrested people who ran fake websites imitating the Trust’s guest house booking portal, and the Trust takes bookings only through its official site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which temples should first-time visitors see in Somnath?

Somnath Jyotirlinga comes first, because its queue and rules set the pace of the day. Take the Triveni Ghat group next, including Gita Mandir and Lakshmi Narayan Temple, then Dehotsarg Tirth, 1.5 km from the main temple. Bhalka Tirth, 5 km out on the Veraval highway, is the farthest stop and needs a vehicle. Add the Old Somnath Temple and Shri Ram Mandir if time allows.

How far is Bhalka Tirth from Somnath Temple?

The Trust gives 5 km, on the Prabhas Veraval highway.

Can I carry a phone or camera into Somnath Temple?

No. The Trust prohibits mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, laptops, tablets and calculators inside. A cloak room with lockers is free, and photography is not allowed.

Is there help for senior citizens at Somnath Temple?

Yes. Wheelchairs and golf carts are available at the main gate, and a lift works inside the temple premises.

What time is the Somnath sound and light show?

The Trust lists 8 to 9 PM on its FAQ page and 7:45 to 8:45 PM on its Darshan page. It is not held in the monsoon, so confirm the time at the gate.

Is there an entry fee for Somnath Temple?

No. Entry is free. Poojas are booked and paid for separately through the Trust’s official website.

For a longer trip that includes Dwarka, see our Dwarka Somnath tour package and the Dwarka Somnath yatra planning guide.

Gujarat is one of the holiest destinations for a deeply spiritual experience.
