Gujarat Tourism puts the hilltop temple at about 800 m above sea level, though published figures for the hill run from 762 m to 822 m. The shrine is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2004. The listing covers the whole park, not the temple alone, and takes in the fortifications and mosques of old Champaner at the foot of the hill.

The temple trust says tradition places the right toes of Sati on this hilltop, which is why Pavagadh counts as a Shakti Peeth. The same tradition says the sage Vishwamitra placed the goddess here. Gujarat Tourism adds that pilgrims came long before Champaner grew into a city.

History of Kalika Mata Temple

The Patai Raval Legend

A folk tale ties the hill to the Patai Raval rulers. Mahakali is said to have joined a Navratri Garba disguised as a woman, and Jaisinh, the last Patai ruler, watched her with bad intent. She cursed his kingdom. The documented part is plainer: Sultan Mahmud Begada besieged Pavagadh and took it in 1484, and Champaner later served as his capital.

Rebuilding in 2022

According to the temple trust, the conquest destroyed the temple’s spire, and the shrine went without a spire or flag for about five centuries. A dargah of the Sufi saint Sadanshah Pir stood within the complex.

The redevelopment came in two phases. The first was inaugurated in April 2022. The second, which expanded the temple base and surroundings across three levels, was inaugurated on 18 June 2022, when a flag was hoisted on the temple for the first time in about five centuries, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. PTI reported that the dargah was shifted to a spot close to the temple. Gujarat government figures reported in July 2026 give the new premises as about 2,980 square metres, up from 545. Anyone who last came before 2022 will find a much larger complex.

Darshan at Kalika Mata Temple, Pavagadh

The main shrine holds three forms of the goddess. Kalika Mata appears as a head only, the mukhwato, painted red. Beside it stand full idols of Mahakali and the yantras of Bahuchara Mata, according to Gujarat Tourism.

Darshan runs from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM every day, per the temple trust. Visitor guides report no darshan fee, and the trust’s website lists donations rather than tickets.

The trust lists the Mangla aarti at 6:00 AM and the Sandhya aarti at 7:00 PM. Several travel sites quote 5:00 AM and 6:30 PM; go by the trust.

Navratri Hours at Kalika Mata Temple

Festival days run on a different clock. During Sharad Navratri 2026 the trust opened the temple between 5:00 and 6:00 AM and kept darshan going until 8:30 PM. The ropeway started at 4:00 AM, and on key days such as Ashtami, Navami and Poonam it ran until 9:00 PM, according to Gujarat Samachar (5 October 2026).

Those were the 2026 arrangements, and each festival’s hours are announced separately. The trust’s website also lists a nine-day Navratri in March and April, so check its announcements before planning around either. For other festivals in the state, see the Gujarat festivals guide.

Pavagadh Ropeway and the Climb to the Temple

The ropeway, Maa Mahakalika Udan Khatola, is run by Usha Breco. It starts at Machi and ends near Dudhiya Talav. The ride covers 763 m, climbs 297 m and takes about six minutes in enclosed cabins that seat six. It does not reach the temple.

It is also busy. A Gujarat government release in August 2026 counted more than 23.43 lakh riders on the Pavagadh ropeway in 2025-26, ahead of Ambaji (15.58 lakh) and Girnar (8.31 lakh).

Ropeway Timings and Tickets

Hours

6:00 AM to 5:45 PM per the Gujarat government release (August 2026). Call the helpline before any trip that hinges on the ropeway.

The Final Climb after the Ropeway

No official count of the steps after the ropeway has been published, and reports disagree. Gujarat Samachar puts the walk at 250 steps, while DeshGujarat gave 282 in October 2023 and 449 in April 2025. Budget for the higher figure.

A second ropeway section from Dudhiya Talav to the temple, announced at ₹115 crore in April 2025, is meant to cut the climb to about 40 steps. We could not confirm that it is open, so plan as if it is not.

Walking up from Machi

The government-built path from Machi Chowk is 3.01 km long with about 2,374 steps, according to figures reported in July 2026. The ropeway operator rounds that to about 2,000. Choose the walk only if everyone in your group can manage it.

How to Reach Kalika Mata Temple

Road distance to the temple area

Temple trust

Ropeway operator

Vadodara

54 km

54 km

Ahmedabad

151 km

152 km

Surat

207 km

211 km

Vadodara Airport

49.2 km

48 km

Ahmedabad Airport

159.6 km

Not listed

By Road

State buses and taxis run from Vadodara to Champaner, and buses go on from Champaner bus stand to Machi. The trust and the operator differ by up to 4 km, depending on the city. Gujarat Tourism’s 45 km is Vadodara to Champaner town, so it does not contradict either. Vehicles stop at Machi, where a multi-level parking facility was completed under the redevelopment. The operator says parking there is chargeable.

By Train

The temple trust names Champaner as the nearest railway station. If your train does not stop there, get down at Vadodara Junction and continue by road.

By Air

Vadodara Airport is the closest, 49.2 km from the temple by the trust’s figure. Ahmedabad Airport is 159.6 km away and makes sense only when your flight does not connect to Vadodara.

Best Time to Visit Pavagadh

October to March is the usual recommendation. Summers are hot, so go at opening time if you must travel then. The monsoon turns the hill green, and the ropeway operator itself suggests visiting then, but it says ropeway service in the monsoon depends on the weather.

Navratri brings the largest crowds at Pavagadh. Go then only if the festival is the reason for the trip.

Planning Your Visit

Allow 2 to 3 hours for darshan including the ropeway, as a planning estimate from travel guides. Champaner adds half a day.

Do not assume the ropeway ends at the temple door. A few hundred steps remain.

Packed food is not allowed in the ropeway cabin. The operator offers baggage storage, but not for big luggage or valuables.

Machi is the last point vehicles reach. Gujarat Tourism lists Machi Haveli there as a rest house for pilgrims.

Call the trust (909 909 10 42) or the ropeway helpline (1800-202-4050) before a festival visit.

If Someone in Your Group Struggles with Steps

The ropeway operator’s FAQ says physically challenged passengers get priority boarding and that wheelchairs are available at its ropeways. That covers the ride, not the steps beyond it. Since a few hundred steps remain, ask the temple trust what help exists on the steps before you bring anyone who cannot manage them.

Places to See Near Pavagadh

The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park has more to offer than the shrine. Other sites in and around it include the Jain temples on the hill, the Jami Masjid and other mosques of old Champaner, Saat Kaman, Navlakha Kothar and the Vada Talav. Gujarat Tourism suggests hiring a car in Vadodara if you want to combine Pavagadh with sites such as Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary. More shrines are listed under temples in Gujarat.

FAQs

What are the Kalika Mata Temple Pavagadh timings?

The temple trust lists darshan from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM daily, with the Mangla aarti at 6:00 AM and the Sandhya aarti at 7:00 PM. Navratri hours run longer: in 2026 darshan continued until 8:30 PM.

What are the Pavagadh ropeway timings?

The operator’s page lists 6:00 AM to 6:45 PM, but a Gujarat government release in August 2026 gives 6:00 AM to 5:45 PM. Plan around 5:45 PM, and expect earlier starts and later closings on major Navratri days.

How much is the Pavagadh ropeway ticket?

The normal ticket is ₹150 and the child ticket is ₹80 for children below 110 cm. One-way tickets exist, and a combined Gujarat Ropeways pass costs ₹974. Book at udankhatola.com or call 1800-202-4050.

How many steps are there after the ropeway?

No official count is published. Reports range from 250 to 449, so budget for the higher end. The ropeway ends near Dudhiya Talav, and walking all the way from Machi Chowk is about 2,374 steps over 3.01 km.

How far is Pavagadh from Vadodara?

The temple trust gives 54 km to the temple area, and the ropeway operator agrees. Gujarat Tourism gives 45 km to Champaner town. Vadodara Airport is 49.2 km from the temple.

When is the best time to visit Pavagadh?

October to March is the usual recommendation. The monsoon is green, but ropeway service then depends on the weather. Navratri is the busiest period.

Can senior citizens or wheelchair users visit Pavagadh?

The ropeway operator gives priority boarding to physically challenged passengers and says wheelchairs are available at its ropeways. A few hundred steps remain after the ropeway, so call the temple trust on 909 909 10 42 about help on the steps before you go.

Are Kalika Mata Temple and Mahakali Temple the same?

Yes. The shrine on Pavagadh Hill is known as Kalika Mata Temple, Mahakali Temple and Kali Mata Temple. The temple trust uses both the Kalika and Mahakali names.

To plan Pavagadh as part of a wider Gujarat trip, message Gujarat Expert on WhatsApp at +91-7838908606 or send the quote form on this page.
