It opened in 1877 as part of a School of Art set up by Maharao Khengarji III and was first called the Fergusson Museum, which makes it the oldest museum in Gujarat. The building is Italian Gothic, raised by local craftsmen. Its 11 galleries cover coins (including the Kori, Kutch’s own currency), textiles, weapons, musical instruments, paintings, silverware, sculpture, wildlife and dioramas of tribal costume, with labels in English and Gujarati. The museum holds the largest surviving collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions, dated to the first century AD, and examples of the Kutchi script, which is now extinct. It is 3 km from Bhuj airport and 4 km from the railway station.
