Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Dwarka

The Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple, nestled in the midst of the sea in Dwarka, undergoes a unique ritual every year during June-July when it becomes submerged. Legend has it that during this time, the ocean itself performs a sacred Jalabhishek (water offering) to Mahadev. Remarkably, this ancient temple, housing the self-manifested Swayambhu Shivalinga, dates back an astonishing 5000 years.

Significance

This hilltop Shaiva temple is home to over 1300 Shiva Lingams, 75 metal relics of Shankaracharya, and 1200 Salgramsheelas, dedicated to Chandra-Moulishwar Shiva. Though the temple provides a stairway for ascent, these stairs become submerged during high tides. The annual Mahashivratri celebration at the temple draws numerous devotees, offering not only spiritual significance but also a breathtaking view of the Dwarka coastline.

History

The Shivalingam, carved in the Arabian Sea millennia ago, is known as Sri Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Mandir. During the monsoons, the sea anoints the Shivalinga, temporarily covering the temple. The grand fair organized on Maha Shivaratri adds to the temple’s historical significance.

Best Time to Visit

While the temple welcomes visitors throughout the year, the optimal times are during June-July and Maha Shivaratri, when festivities are at their peak, lasting for two days.

Mahashivratri – The Grand Festival

The most significant celebration occurs during Mahashivratri, marked by a grand fair in and around the temple. Devotees can partake in the Jalabhishek of the Shivalinga, limited to the morning hours from 8 AM to 12 noon due to the small size of the sanctum sanctorum.
